Burton Hamner has
worked with more than 200 companies in a dozen countries to
identify cost-effective opportunities to reduce waste and pollution
and increase productivity and efficiency. From 1991-1994, as a
pollution prevention specialist for the Washington Department of
Ecology, he helped over 100 companies around Seattle to prepare
detailed 5-year plans to reduce chemical use and waste generation.
From 1995-1998 he worked for the US Agency for International
Development in Southeast Asia doing facility audits and training
programs. He has also participated or led facility assessments
in Peru and Honduras.
We have practical
experience with companies in aerospace composites, pulp and paper,
plastics, painting and coating, hotels and restaurants, auto repair,
wood furniture and finishing, zoos, feather pillows, shipyards and
marinas, colleges and universities, and others.
Besides
identifying specific opportunities, we work with clients on their
management options. Environmental Management Systems are one
of the tools we use, but not the only one. Read our article,
"Pollution Prevention: The
Cost-Effective Approach to ISO 14001 Compliance" to
learn how an EMS should really work. We also use the Balanced
Scorecard and the Baldrige Performance Excellence Criteria for
management improvements. Read Burton Hamner's recent paper on
Integrating Market-Based Sustainability Indicators and Performance
Management Systems.
